Eastern Michigan Young Marines, 2nd Battalion, Michigan Regiment, 5th Division, National Headquarters

Our Unit's "Veteran's Appreciation" Section

"Veteran's Appreciation" is a simple, yet very important part of our organization. In 2000, Young Marines' National Headquarters introduced an annual event to the program, intended to further develop the understanding of the significance of America's Veterans, and the sacrifice that they have put forth.

Since then, the week-long, community-involving event has grown substantially, becoming a significant milestone in Young Marine history. As Young Marines engage themselves in each activity, not only do they earn community service hours, but also learn about the importance our Vets and their contribution to our country.

In addition to our Unit's many Community Service events throughout the year, we strive to adopt "Veteran's Appreciation Week" into our unit.

Throughout our week, we engage in various activities that challenge the Young Marines. Each year, we include "yard raking" for local Veterans - an activity that directly benefits the Veterans.

What really enhances our effort is our "Certificate Of Appreciation," personalized to each veteran we present it to - especially when they are presented by the Young Marines.

Another event that we take into account is our Shut-In Veteran Visit at our local medical care facility. This event is likely the most emotionally-stirring event for the Young Marines, as they present carnations, balloons, flags, and our personalized certificates to disabled veterans. Some, unfortunately, are incoherent - presenting a challenge for the Young Marines. Most never get a chance to come in contact with disabled citizens until they attend this event. Nevertheless, the youth manage to complete the task in the most outstanding manner.
